Spinal Cord Injury

It’s not just the injury. There’s the feelings that come after suffering through an injury. It’s trying to adjust and readjust your expectation. These are very valid issues and they may or may not have been addressed at any point in your journey from being in the acute ward at the hospital, to a rehabilitation facility, transitional care, and then finally to outpatient rehabilitation. Support groups, access to materials online, and talking to your physical or occupational therapist are all important.

Understanding Spinal Cord Injury

A spinal cord injury (SCI) is a complex medical condition that occurs when there is damage to the spinal cord, resulting in a loss of function, sensation, or mobility below the level of the injury. When a person sustains a spinal cord injury, the messages that travel along the spinal cord between the brain and the rest of the body can be disrupted. This can lead to various degrees of paralysis, loss of sensation, and changes in bodily functions depending on the location and severity of the injury. It is essential to understand that the effects of a spinal cord injury can vary greatly from person to person. The level of injury along the spinal cord will determine which parts of the body are affected and to what extent. In some cases, individuals may experience complete paralysis, while in others, there may be partial loss of function or sensation. In the United States, the ASIA classification system is used to denote what parts of your body are affected and to what extent.

Recovery from a spinal cord injury can be a long and challenging journey that requires comprehensive medical care, rehabilitation, support, and adjustments to daily living. Your doctor of physical therapy, physiatrist, and occupational therapist are important people you should keep in touch with. A psychologist is also another very important member of your team. They can help you navigate the mental challenges you face daily.
